Volunteers have been supporting the hospice since we opened our doors almost 30 years ago. During that time the number of volunteers supporting the hospice has steadily grown and we now have over 400 people contributing their time in so many different ways.

The value of our volunteers goes way beyond a financial saving as they bring with them a wealth of experience from all types of backgrounds and careers and they are integral to all areas of the charity.

Volunteer Roles

Below is a list of our current roles available however we have many more roles within the charity, if you are interested in specific area that is not list below, please contact our Volunteer Services Coordinator.

Shop Assistant

At the shop you will be part of a fun and vibrant team playing a key part in making our customers feel welcome and keeping the shop well stocked and organised. You may also man the till and accept donations. We have bright and airy shops on in Chester, Hoole, Ellesmere Port and Neston.

We are currently looking for volunteers in each location, Monday to Saturday 9:00am to 5:00pm.

Warehouse Assistant

In this role you will be very active in sorting donated stock and ensuring it is fit for sale. You will also help to fulfil orders from the shops ready for delivery. A good knowledge of clothing brands is very helpful although not essential. The Hospice warehouse is located on Rivington Road, Ellesmere Port and serves all of our shops.

We are currently looking for volunteers, Monday to Saturday – Flexible Times.

Drivers Mate

Helping out on our van is a great role if you like to get out and about meeting people and keeping busy. During your shift you will partner a driver collecting goods from people’s houses as well as delivering and collecting stock for our shops. This is a very active role and will involve a lot of lifting.

We’re looking to recruit volunteer Receptionists to provide additional evening and weekend cover for our Reception desk. Ideally, you will be able to commit to covering a 3-4 hour shift, however, the hours could be worked flexibly and shared with others. Evening cover will be 4:30pm – 7:00pm and weekend cover will be 10:00am – 4:30pm (10am -1pm and 1pm – 4:30pm shifts).

Do you have a warm and friendly approach and can provide a welcoming environment for our visitors, answer telephone calls, deal with enquiries and advise and direct callers as required? If so, this is a great opportunity for you to join the team and contribute to the smooth running of the Hospice.

If you are a qualified counsellor looking to increase your hours, or a counsellor in training looking for a placement, you can apply to join our team of volunteer counsellors. Bereavement is often the reason behind the referral, but the reasons behind the distress are varied, so this is interesting and rewarding work. You will receive in-house supervision and regular CPD opportunities.

Collection Tin Co-ordinator

We have more than 200 collection tins at sites right across our catchment area which raise vital funds for the Hospice throughout the year. We are looking for volunteers to help us collect tins in their local community. Volunteer ID will be provided.

Fundraising Volunteer

We are looking for volunteers to help at street and supermarket collections. We have collections taking place throughout the year in town centres, shopping centres and garden centres. This is a great role for someone new to volunteering and also for those who can only spare a few hours.

Also we are looking for volunteers to help at our fundraising events throughout the year. Volunteers are required to help with registration duties on the day, assist participants and help with the smooth running of events. This is a great opportunity for people who cannot commit to regular volunteering days and times.

Coffee Shop Assistant

We are looking for volunteers to join our new Hospice café. The role involves greeting customers, taking orders, basic food and refreshment preparation and ensuring the café is kept clean and tidy.

As well as serving the general public, the family and friends of the hospice patients will be using the café and therefore a sensitive and friendly manner is needed. Volunteers will need to make a regular commitment. Appropriate training will be provided.

Kitchen Assistant

This role will suit people with experience of working in a kitchen / catering environment. Volunteers will provide an essential background service to assist in the smooth running of the hospice. The role involves preparing basic food, making refreshments and cleaning duties within the kitchen. you will need a friendly manner as you will be serving refreshments to patients and relatives.

Volunteers will be given the appropriate training to Level 2 Food Hygiene and basic Health and Safety. Volunteers will need to be able to lift and carry trays and use a trolley.
