Chester Celebrates the life of a loved one this Christmas

Join with our community across Chester and the local area to remember a loved one this Christmas and dedicate a light on the Hospice of the Good Shepherd’s Christmas tree to shine brightly in their grounds.

Normally, the Hospice’s Light Up A Life services bring together hundreds of people to remember someone who has died or someone living away from home.

However, with current restrictions in place we have taken the decision to take our service online. In this particularly difficult year, we would like to invite all of our supporters to join together virtually from Chester and beyond to watch a pre-recorded service on Sunday 13th December.

The person you choose to remember does not have to have been cared for at the Hospice for you to honour them with a dedication. You can choose to dedicate a light on our main Christmas tree, an individual 6ft cut Christmas tree or a light on our online virtual tree.

Caroline Siddall, Director of Income Generation, said: “Light Up a Life is a lovely way for people to remember either someone they have loved and lost or someone who may be far away.”

She continued: “As you can’t be with us this year, we are also offering you the chance to purchase a small box to have at home as you watch our service. This includes a candle, an exclusive Light Up A Life Christmas tree decoration, service sheet, a poem, tea bag and biscuits.”

The ‘Light Up A Life in a box’ can be purchased for just £5 with all proceeds going to the Hospice.

“Not only will you be honouring your loved ones this Christmas, you’ll also be helping raise vital income for your local Hospice to ensure we can continue to care for local people living with a life limiting illness.”

Your loved one’s name will also appear in our book of memories which can be viewed online during December.

The service will bring everyone together virtually in a festival of light to remember loved ones through poems, reading and music. The lights will also be illuminated during the service and will continue to shine in the Hospice until 6th January 2020.

The Hospice provides entirely free care to the most vulnerable and is currently in an urgent #SaveYourHospice appeal due to funding being hit as a result of Coronavirus.

The Hospice of the Good Shepherd is based in Chester, and serves the communities of West Cheshire, Chester, Ellesmere Port, Deeside and the surrounding areas, caring for patients with life-limiting conditions and supporting bereaved families.

Its dedicated team of staff and healthcare professionals aim to meet the unique physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs of those with life-limiting conditions, and to help maintain their dignity. It provides specialist palliative care for people with cancer and non-cancer life-limiting conditions.

The Hospice offers physical, emotional and spiritual care for patients, as well as family support and bereavement services.

So far, the Hospice of the Good Shepherd has been raising money through virtual events such as quiz nights as well as their weekly lottery draw, where participants have the chance to win £1000 for a cost of just £1 per week. Though fundraising is particularly more difficult due to Government lockdown, they are still determined to keep their Hospice afloat.
