Weeks of effort and commitment paid off for the brave volunteers who signed up to compete in the Hospice of the Good Shepherd’s first-ever ‘Hospice Strictly’ dance spectacular.
The nine individuals, most without any previous ballroom dance experience, were paired with professional dancers and put through their paces during many hours of intense practice, aching muscles and fraying nerves.
The couples finally took their turn on the dance floor at a star-studded event at Chester Racecourse. They entertained the audience with an action-packed programme of showstopping routines including the jive, samba, waltz and Charleston.
Hoping to impress the judges and lift the glitterball trophy were hospice supporters Cat Williams, Alec Read, Richard Pridding, Tay Wheelan, Rhian Anstey, Bethan Turner, Jane Montague, Andy Turner and Zoe Bock Walker.
The judging panel included former Strictly dancers Chloe Hewitt and Lilia Kopylova. The compere for the evening was Billy Hui BEM DL.
With the combined votes from the judges and the audience, Alec Read and professional dance partner Hannah Roberts were crowned glitterball champions for their Viennese waltz described by the judges as “near perfect” and scoring 39/40.
The special prize for being the top fundraiser went to Richard Pridding who succeeded in raising more than £3,172 in sponsorship.
“The event exceeded the expectations of everyone involved,” commented the hospice’s Head of Fundraising, Justin Caroe.
“We had glitz, glamour and great food together with fancy footwork, frilly frocks and stunning suits: the atmosphere was amazing! As well as creating some superb memories, we raised more than £43K for the hospice which is remarkable.
“Every penny will go towards the work of the hospice team in caring for local people and their loved ones at the final stages of life. Thanks to all those who participated and supported the occasion.”
Justin added: “We’ve already received interest from people who want to take to the dancefloor next year so it looks like this will a be a regular addition to our events calendar.”
