Dying Matters Open Day
Dying Matters is an annual, national awareness week, held between 8th -14th May this year, which aims to get the general public thinking and talking about issues associated with death and dying. Dying Matters is a broad based and inclusive national Coalition set up and led by the National Council for Palliative Care (NCPC) to support the implementation of the Department of Health’s End of Life Care Strategy. This year the hospice is getting involved as the benefits of having difficult conversations and making plans become increasingly evident.
This year’s Dying Matters Awareness Week is “WHAT CAN YOU DO?” – aimed at encouraging individuals and organisations to take simple steps that can make a big difference to people when they are dying or bereaved. Whether it is through sharing their wishes with someone close to them, registering to become an organ donor, writing a will, taking out a funeral plan or making an effort to call someone nearing the end of their life or who has been bereaved, members of the public can take small actions that make a difference.
Liz Taylor, Living Well Centre and Community Development Manager commented
“Dying Matters Week provides a timely opportunity for the hospice to open its doors to the wider community and encourage them to take some time to think about a subject most would choose not to. Working within the hospice environment we see time and again the benefit when patients and those important to them have had conversations around their wishes, have made a will and sometimes planned their funeral and we also see the additional stress which can be caused when this has not been done.
Taking time out to have such conversations and make plans before you are in a situation where this information is needed is really important and we are delighted that we now have the facilities to provide this wider service to the community. “
The Hospice is holding a “WHAT CAN YOU DO” information morning on Saturday 13th May, 10.00am to 1pm. The event is open to the general public and being held in our new Living Well Centre. To register your interest please email firstname.lastname@example.org
